The Reciprocal Transformation Of Contemporary Chinese Verbs And Adjectives Cognitive Research

After two discussions of word class last century, word-class-diving theory gradually reached an agreement, most linguists proposed to divide word classes by grammatical function and analysis of meaning. Therefore, this thesis is based on former theories, introduces ideational meaning, and regards meaning as word-class-diving foundation, words’ grammatical function as partition of the standard. From cognitive linguistics’ rising last1980s, semantic cognitive study widened the field of lexicon research, and cognitive semantics combined human cognition with linguistic performance, revealed parts of speech using dispute well. The writer does with blurring problems between verb and adjective, and aims at analyzing the relations and changes of these two parts of speech.The first section of Chapter1in this thesis analyses and summarizes the definition of "word-class conversion", and this thesis compares "conversion" with "word-class shift","conjunction","polysemy" in second section, finally we obtain that "conversion" is a way of word-class developments and changes, and it is closely related to "word-class shift","conjunction" and "polysemy"Chapter2studies from mutual conversion of verb and adjective, besides conversion phenomenon of "adverb of degree+verb" recognized commonly in the past, this thesis considers that verb acting as attribute also belongs to one kind of verb turning into adjective, because the verb in the position of attitude hides some typical characters of verb, and highlights the typical grammatical features of adjective. Verb acting as attitude is divided into "V+的+N" and "VN" modifier-head construction, so the second and third section respectively analyze these ways of word-class conversion, and we analyze changes between the meaning of verb and grammatical function in phrase from the analysis of semantic relation between verb and noun. Last section analyzes the appearance or not of the word "的"in verb-noun modifier-head construction and discusses ambiguity produced by verb-noun construction over semantics.The beginning two sections of Chapter3divide the phenomenon of adjective turning into verb into two parts:conversion of "dynamic adjective" without object and conversion of adjective with object. Adjectives without object are mainly analyzed the conversion of adjective from the dynamic nature reflected in "dynamic adjective", and this phenomenon mainly focus on qualitative adjective. Adjectives with object are respectively analyzed the dispute of adjective with object from single-syllable adjective and double-syllable adjective. Firstly, the third section analyzes the dynamic meaning reflected in adjective with object from valance of adjective, and then analyzes the effect of object in the whole adjective-objective structure, finally my thesis analyzes the semantic changes of adjective with object in detail.The last Chapter analyzes inner relation of mutual conversion between verb and adjective more deeply from semantic frame of cognitive semantics. The first section summarizes cognitive semantics, the second section analyzes inner semantic relation of mutual conversion between verb and adjective, and last section analyzes the reason of mutual conversion between verb and adjective and effects on the development of language caused by this phenomenon.
