Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the German composer, pianist, and therepresentative figure of Vienna classical music, whose creation has touched upon somany fields that ranging from opera, piano music, chamber music and symphony.Beethoven’s collections absorb great amount of different opinions from othersregarding classical music, and initiate Romanism into music at the same time. Amongwhich, the piano music mainly include32sonatas,20variations and some sketches. The creation of the32sonatas and the20variations almost runs through Beethoven’swhole composing career. Despite that the variations did not receive as much attentionas the sonatas, there are no lack of excellent ones among them.Based on Beethoven’s piano variations, this article carefully elaborates thedifferences between the two concepts of variation and variation skills, as well as theorigin and development of piano variations. Using Beethoven’s Eroica variations Op.35as an example, the author starts from Beethoven’s heroic complex, throughintroducing another three different works which have the same "Prometheus" themeas the Eroica variations Op.35, the author understands and learns the fundamentalkey of the whole piano variation from the characters and the styles. Then, through theanalysis of the variation theme, the specific variations and the fugue at the end of thesymphony, combining the hints and advices during the performance, the author canbetter understand and seize the artistic image and musical content of this variation, sothat this article is able to provide a more professional theoretical background andbasis for the players in their future second-time creation.
