Franz Joseph Haydn,the founder of the Vienna School of classical music,is known as the "father of the symphony" and "father of the quartet".His works,full of health,bright,humorous,relaxed atmosphere,simple melody,in temperament to maintain the connection with folk music.At the same time,the harmonic texture of his works is clear,the structure of his works is symmetrical and exquisite,the logic is strict,and the organic combination with the varied mood.Among his piano variations,"Andante and Variations in f Minor" has a slightly melancholy musical style,with sad poetry and clever emotional changes.This thesis analyzes the music and playing skills of "Andante and Variations in f Minor" in combination with the creation characteristics of Haydn’s piano variations,and provides some theoretical suggestions and references for the style and playing understanding of Haydn’s late works.This paper is divided into three chapters.The first chapter introduces the origin of variations,five variations by Haydn and the characteristics of his variations.The second chapter introduces the analysis of "Andante and Variations in f Minor",and expounds the creation background of the work and the variations and melody texture changes in the form.The third chapter focuses on the performance of "Andante and Variations in f minor" the key points and technical difficulties,in order to have a further study of the late classical works in the way of interpretation and piano teaching.
