This essay studies and discusses multi-image in contemporary photography, a form which became popular in the60s and70s in Europe and North America and continues to exist as an important presentation form. Multi-image form refers to two or more than two images shown at the same time to construct an individual photographic piece.As a common form, the emergence of multi-image photography has an important meaning in the history of photography. This form continues to be used by various contemporary artists today; there have not been any thorough studies regarding this particular form up till today. This essay takes on the perspective of a researcher and a photographer to understand the occurrence and development of multi-image form to help determine its value in the practice of contemporary photography today.The essay starts by define multi-image photography, and then studies the motive and time of emergence of such form. Later, it categoriezes multi-image photography into three principle types based on their utilization. After that, it goes into detailed analysis of three representative contemporary artists, their work and individual approaches, so as to understand further development of this photographic form today. References are made to critical writings and artist interviews. Finally, it draws conclusions on this study of multi-image photography in today’s art world.
