The development of documentary photography has played a significant role inthe history of Chinese photographic history. In his work Chinese ImagingRevolutionary, Hu Wugong, a documentary photographer, argues:“From the laterperiod of the 1970s to the present (October 2004), the Chinese imaging hadundergone a revolution.”Documentary photography has developed as a distinctiveimage form to serve the public culture with“social value”and“historic significance”as its value evaluation standards. This brings about a profound influence on thesocial mass media and photographic teaching. During this period of history,documentary has gradually developed into“unification.”Relative to the“unification”in traditional documentary photography, thepractice of the contemporary documentary photography has developed itn“fission.”Reviewing the time reasons for the development and change, it is that the creationideas of the photographers have been influenced by the contemporary culture,economy and communication environment. However, documentary photography isbestowed with its special and independent manifesting pattern and cultural life formwhile working as a technical tool serving the society. This contradict is thefundamental reason why the contemporary documentary photographic developmenthas produced“fission.”The paper tries to probe into the development of contemporary documentaryphotography from the perspective of history and culture. To better review thedevelopment and change of contemporary documentary photography, the paper isorganized from three aspects innovatively, namely, image content, image manifestingpattern and image theme .The contemporary documentary photography will becompared with the traditional documentary photography fully in terms of the threeaspects and the conclusion will be drawn afterwards. Additionally, the writer writes the following a photo-viewing sequence. The flashback will help readerscomprehend the thesis more easily. It narrates theoretic knowledge from easy todifficult.
