Yu Zhiding is a representative of the Bo Chen school of the ealry Qing Dynasty. He was born poor, living at the bottom of the society. Yet he has skill in figure painting. With his remarkable figure painting skill, he had a large circle of friends and associated with various celebrities in Kangxi Dynasty. With the help of these notable friends, he came to Beijing from Yangzhou, and got an office position here. His painting reputation far saw. This article will talk from Yu Zhiding’s social position and relations, mainly about his image creation of the literati painters, three questions included. Why and how did he portray himself as an literati paniter? Why hadn’t he succeeded in occupying a place in literati circles? This thesis consists of five parts. The opening chapter and the chapter2talk from Yu Zhiding’s life and social relations to show his situation, creative environment, and how literati treat him. These two chapters aim at explaning the first question. Chapter3discusses Yu Zhiding how to build his literati image through imitating ancient style, paniting content, form, line drawing techniques and the inscriptions made by literati. Chapter4explains the reasons Yu Zhiding fail to make his way in literati circles which are considered to be birth defect and acquired factors. Moreover, Chapter4will compare Yu Zhiding with Lan Ying, Chen Hongshou and Luo Pin to show the gulf between professional painters and literati circles which cannot be bridged. Chapter5draws conclusions.
