Yuan Jie, one of the most important poets and poetic critics during the prosperous and middle Tang Dynasty, has played a significant role in connecting the previous and following development of the literature in that Era. He lived in the prosperous period of the Li-Tang Era and went through the turbulent situations caused by An Lushan’s Rebellion; due to the historic background plus the influence from his family and their traditions, he has formed a unique style in both poetry theory and its composition, comparing with the mainstream literatures at that time. In this paper, I will study his life and contributions, family background, religious belief, literature theory, poetry composition as well as the art of poetry, respectively. The whole paper will be composed of nine aspects in detail as follows:In Chapter One, Yuan Jie’s family and its influence on him will be systematically analyzed. The hunting tradition of the Xianbei Tribe has set a solid foundation for his following military career, where his grandfather Yuan Heng and brother Yuan Dexiu influenced him significantly in both thoughts and behaviors.The idea of Confucianism combined with Taoism and being an official or seclusive has been studied in Chapter Two. Generally speaking, Confucianism played a relatively important role; however, the thought of being indifferent or obedient to destiny may become a comfort during his unsuccessful time. The thought of being an official or seclusive played a contradictory role in his life, which explains his feelings of concerning about his country and his people and the disappointment of the dirty and dark politics.In Chapter Three, the background forming his polite letters, the satire reaction literary conceptions and its characterization has been studied; meanwhile, the literary conceptions revealing during the compiling of the "Qie Zhong Volum"has also been analyzed.In Chapter four, his allegory poetry full of the concerning of the society, and the Poetry about Immortals in the praise sense, the eclogue in the quiet style have been studied respectively.In Chapter Five, the prosody style of his poems is studied, including the simplicity in the poems with five characters, the elegance and quaint style in the four-word poems, subtle style in the Qu-Sao poems and the simple and unadorned style in the new Yuefu poems, as well as the euphemistical and beautiful song and the ancient quatrains.In Chapter Six, the art of narration has been studied. In general, his poems reveal a simplicity style in the narration, which is realized by including all components of the poesy, inducing the unique respects and flexible narration approaches.The characteristic rhetoric artistry has been studied in Chapter Seven. He has employed the questioning-answering, comparison, exaggeration, end-head paring, and smile in his poems as the main rhetorical device.In Chapter Eight, thirteen poems from the final version of the one hundred and one poems volume and the so called "Hai-Yang Springs"Volum have been systematically compared. It is found that they are in common in both the vocabulary and thoughts as well as the means of artistic expression, which may prove that these thirteen poems were composed by Yuan Jie.
