The battle for the defense of Nanking was waged in the early days of the Anti-Japanese War for the defense of the capital Nanking. It came shortly after the battle of Songhu. Former Researches on this battle have been focusing on the analysis of strategies of the war and the concrete process of it. Studies on martyrs to this battle have been relatively few. Focuses on their documents were fewer. This thesis tries to make an analysis on martyrs to the Battle for the Defense of Nanking through studying materials like Documents on Martyrs to the Battle for the Defense of Nanking, basing on the facts of the battle experiences of the Chinese army, the process of their breaking-through and their loss in the battle, etc., so as to have a deeper understanding of the Battle for the Defense of Nanking. The officers’and soldiers’feat of fighting bravely against the enemies is an essential part in the historical pictures of the Chinese nation’s cause of resisting invasion and fighting for independence. After the battle, among the100,000officers and soldiers who sacrificed themselves in the battle, only about4,000of them were provided with pensions, which reflected the problems of the National Government’s pension system in the early days of the Anti-Japanese War. Considering the officers’and soldiers’ great sacrifices and miserable treating received after their deaths, we should build monuments for them to commemorate their great deeds since we are promoting the notion of humanistic care at present.
