Spatial turn in the cultural studies in mid-20th century re-arouses people’s attention to the old topic of space. Space exists not only as a matter of fact; it presents spiritual attributes too. From Henri Lefebvre’s perspective, space is more than an objective reality; it is also format existence, a container of social relationships. In this paper, I am trying to interpret memory space, urban space and spirit space and their cultural moral lying beneath from the view of cultural geography. In general, Lessing experienced a significant space displacement in life, as she traveled from the colony of Africa, the outpost of the empire to London, the heart of the empire. Such impact on his life and writing cannot be ignored. Let’s go deeper to his representative work The Golden notebook, the space imago that hidden in the seemingly complicate content has deep cultural moral. It could be a combination of time and memories in the past, a manifestation of different kinds of social power relationships or a tool for analyzing his spiritual status changes. Based upon the context of The Golden notebook, this paper combines Henri Lefebvre’s space theory of social production、 Faucoult’s thought of space power and Benjamin’s urban theory with the intention to analyze the function and meaning of space in text construction. Lucian Goldman,a French Marxist critics, he believes the content of modern novels shares the structure origins with the Capitalism society. In other words, there is a relationship called "same-structure different essence" between the urbanized Capitalism society and the multi-angle description of space for present and past, reality and spirit in Lessing’s The Golden notebook. When people switch their attention to space from time, history and society, they find a brand new method to view and understand the world, also a new perspective for literature text studies. Although the description of space in literature is neither a real power, nor something has direct impact on the society, it can present and depict social relationships and its development history. It is during the analysis and interpretation of spatial imago that the meaning of the world that we live in gets illuminated. The thesis has four chapters:From the perspective of life traces of Lessing, in the first chapter I will analyze the space displacement from the colony of Africa, the outpost of the empire to London, the heart of the empire, and its impact on Lessing’s life and writing. From the Second chapter to the Fourth chapter,I show solicitude for analyzing the space in The Golden notebook.Starting the Second chapter, I investigated deeper into the book of The Golden notebook。 I mainly focus on three representative imago in the book, namely, a small hostel、 African prairie and the boxcar, trying to find out the ravage war and racism has brought to the people. In Chapter three I will analyze the urban gender space. Henri Lefebvre believes the production of space has played an important role in human life. The fact that social difference fundamentally rules over the fights against the space has powerfully proved the theory of Henri Lefebvre. This part primarily utilizes the space theory, social sex theory and feminism to research female profound reason why social sex could be structured from the angle of space.I switch my focus from the real world to subjective world and introduce the blue spirit space in The Golden notebook in chapter four. Blue is a symbol of melancholy and a portraiture of the spirit world of the leading character Anna. Anna’s soul finally reached Sisyphus-style golden space after experiencing a Kafka-Style lost space and Baudelaire-style criminal space. Anna’s soul reached nirvana after this unusual spirit trip. The generation of golden space is a summary and distillation of the core idea of the literature. The conclusion is a summary and distillation of the whole papers. From Borges’s novels Aleph, I try to elicit the concept of The third space, and analyze The Golden notebook is a all-inclusive the third space.
