In the early of Qing Dynasty, Native Suzhou Mao Sheng-shan and Mao Zong-gang are father and son, who are one of the most accomplished traditional opera critics after Jin Sheng-tan. They completed the cooperation of opera the Story of Lute criticism, imitating Jin Sheng-tan’s "Six Genius Books" and named "the Seventh Genius Book the Story of Lute". On the basis of giving the particular neatening and studying of the comment on the critique of opera the Story of Lute written by the Mao, the author thinks that it embodied a wealth of dramatic ideas, and character theory is one of the important contents.The paper is divided into three parts:The first part introduces the whole life of Mao Sheng-shan and his son, Mao Zong-gang, and the general situation on the criticism written by the Mao. Because of the fire, the information about Mao Sheng-shan and Mao Zong-gang handed down is deficient. So the paper only briefly introduces the whole life about Mao Sheng-shan and Mao Zong-gang. Besides, the paper also briefly introduces the comment on opera the Story of Lute before the Mao and the version of the Mao’s critics about opera the Story of Lute do a rough sort out and summarized.The second part analyzes the Mao evaluation on the special characters in the Story of Lute, evaluation of defects and the reasons for character typed. Comparing the Li’s critics and Chen’s critics, Mao’s critics has their own outstanding features. Firstly, the Mao think Cai Bo-jie is not only "a filial son", but also "a charity husband". Secondly, the Mao give different preference to the comment on Zhao Wu-niang and Miss Liu. To the former, the Mao give preference to "a filial woman", and to the latter, they mainly focus on "a virtuous lady" Thirdly, the Mao also comment a large number of subordinate characters. They don’t stubbornly repudiate the father of Cai Bo-jie, and they regard the father also loves his son as the mother. The Mao doesn’t always repudiate the prime minister Liu, who shows preference to his own daughter as a father. The Mao highlight the old Zhang "righteousness elder" high justice image, and regard him as the author himself. At the same time, the paper sums up many shortcomings about the Mao’s comment on opera the Story of Lute in detail, and analyzes the reasons for character tendency typed.The third part sums up the art of opera about the Mao’s character theory. There are mainly three aspects. Firstly, the relationship of between the characters and the theme, the Mao emphasize the characters serve the theme of expression, and they focus on highlighting of opera the Story of Lute to the theme of "satirizing Wang Si" to persuade people to be "a charity husband". Secondly, the Mao analyze the relation of the character and the context and structure from three aspects, such as the character and the structure, the character and the plot, the character and the situation. Thirdly, the Mao summarize the methods of the characterization on the basis of Jin Sheng-tan. These theories are greatly helpful and have a very good reference for the dramatists that time, even today.Mao sheng-shan and his son common on opera the Story of Lute not only have inheritance to their predecessors, especially Jin Sheng-tan’s criticism the West Chamber, but also develop it. It is the compound of ancestor’s idea and their own viewpoint the critique of opera the Story of Lute written by the Mao has the important role of critical history of the Chinese opera.
