Pop songs are more and more involved to our daily life now, and their lyrics, as a special form of art, are getting more and more attentions from the scholars too. Some of the studies focus on the rhetorical phenomenon in the pop songs’lyrics, most of which are scattered essays but not monographs. This thesis tries to apply iconicity which is a very important theory in cognitive linguistics to the research of pop songs’ lyrics, and analyze how the theory works as a rhetorical device in the lyrics at the phonological, lexical, sentential and textual levels for various rhetorical effects.Besides the "Introduction" and "Summary", there are4chapters in this thesis.Chapter one:Phonological Iconicity and pop songs’ lyrics. Talking about how the phonological iconicity works in pop songs’ lyrics to make the language more attractive. Onomatopoeias and interjections, which conveys a musical and rhythmical sound effect to the audience, reflect the direct phonological iconicity; different tones and vowels in Chinese language convey different emotions of people, which could arouse audience’s sympathy easily, is the reflect of indirect phonological iconicity.Chapter two:Quantity Iconicity and pop songs’ lyrics. The pop songs’lyrics apply quantity iconicity to their languages by using the figure of speech such as repetition, parallelism and pun, which has more or less linguistic forms than need, in purpose of achieving the emphatic effect.Chapter three:Markedness Iconicity and pop songs’ lyrics. By analyzing the figure of speech such as zeugma, hypallage, parody and exaggeration in pop songs’ lyrics, demonstrate how the marked term offer a special meaning in language of lyrics, which make it more vivid and expressive.Chapter four:Metaphor Iconicity and pop songs’ lyrics. Metaphor and analogy which are the typical representation of Metaphor Iconicity, make the pop songs’ lyrics more touching and offer the audience a new perspective and deep unforgettable impression.
