Wu Guanzhong Painting Art Characteristic Research

Wu Guanzhong, known as the painter in the history of Chinese fine arts during the20th century, was blessed with the most qualities of an artist. There is a high degree of pioneering spirit in his works of art, and they are full of the characteristics of the times and exemplary significance. Dedicated his whole life to the exploration of the nationalization of oil paintings and the modernization of Chinese paintings, Wu Guanzhong created a new art style. He combined the artistic conception in the traditional Chinese paintings with the technique of expression in modern Western art to create a strong visual image and to form unique beauty, which was also mixed with modernism and a strong sense of form. The art of Wu Guanzhong showed both the external formal of beauty, and the inner artistic beauty. Thus, Wu Guanzhong made great contribution to modern Chinese paintings.This paper discusses about the main features----beauty in form, artistic beauty and true beauty in Wu Guanzhong’s art works from four aspects: the formation of the concept, the essence of the ideas of Wu Guanzhong’s painting, the characteristics of art works of Wu Guanzhong and the appreciation of Wu Guanzhong’s art works. Those features were formed in the artistic conception to fuse together spirit of traditional Chinese paintings, aesthetic ideal, and form and regular pattern in modern western art.Through a large number of paintings, this paper analyses Wu Guanzhong’s idea in his paintings. With the modern constitution of unique dots, lines, planes and colours in his works, elaborates how Wu Guanzhong combines artistic conception into the form, to make oil paintings possess oriental artistic conception, and make Chinese paintings with modern formation of the era Wu Guanzhong attracted wide attention with his advocation of oil paintings to go national, Chinese paintings to be modernized and the painting thought of unceasing kite line drawing. Wu Guanzhong was bold to emphasis on the beauty in form. The main feature that distinguished Wu Guanzhong’s art works from other painters’was his unique beauty of form that interpreted the natural beauty to mix the oriental artistic beauty with western beauty in form.Discussions of Wu Guanzhong’s paintings on the artistic features from today’s perspective have certain reference significance for the growing artists in the fusion problem of tradition and modern. It helps us to reflect on all the confusion and misunderstanding in contemporary art. Thus we could further go beyond the barriers in the art creation, and explore our own road of art steadfastly.
