Based on the theory of Begriffsgeschichte, this article tries to analyze the meaning construction and the opposite model of the concept of’Xian Dai’in the texts of Chinese fine arts froml979to1989by keywords statistics and discourse analysis, and it discusses those specific questions in the modem transition process of Chinese fine arts in the eighties. This article indicates that the word’Xian Dai’in the texts of Chinese fine arts in that decade was a historical and polysemous idea. Three significance dimensions of’modern art’(formalistic art, grandiose art and specific art) represented the discourse practices of different groups respectively. Multiple opposite models had set the limits of the concept of’Xian Dai’and had built the synchronic modern experience, cultural identity, as well as the diachronic modem sense of history and historical mission. The form of begriffsgeschichte reflects the transition process of Chinese fine art. This paper shows the relative separation between artistic field and political field with the change in the concept of’Modernization’; investigates the rise of artists’individual consciousness and the breakup of collectivistic grand narrations as the grand concept of ’Xian Dai’ transforms; explores the cultural context of Chinese fine art’s ’modernity’ by imitating and opposing the tradition and modernity. Those aspects above are most important in the modernity theory. To dive deep into the concept of ’Xian Dai’is trying to tell what the history of Chinese fine art in eighties was really like in detail.
