In the river of the splendid Chinese modern literature, many works are less controversial than "The Old Tales Retold" written by Lu Xun. Nowadays scholars have been arguing with each other about not only the definition of its stylistic properties and writing style, but also the evaluation of a specific "slick" writing approach. There are huge deviations on the evaluation of the overall achievements. Especially, the study of Lu Xun’s works, which is considered to be the modern Chinese literature’s "School of learning", shows the characteristics abruptly. Since the new period,"Old Tales Retold" research has been heating up. Especially in recent years, great achievements are achieved in academic circles. However, a more consistent agreement about the above issues has not been reached. Then, how to solve the constant controversy, and how to realize the better interpretation of this work, which are the thorny problems needed to solved quickly placed in front of each researchers who study "Old Tales Retold". The author believes that, a big reason of the controversial is the hybridity characteristics of "Old Tales Retold". This is a time-warped, ancient and modern concatenated, hybridity much text, different styles coexisted weird world, from characterization to text form and then style rendering show a hybridity characteristics of heterogeneous collage, and then, many definitions and evaluations of scholars can have the bases but invariably faced with the plight of being unable to cope with a situation. Consequently, it is useful for deciphering texts better and settling reasonably to respect and deeply and carefully explore the hybridity characteristics of "Old Tales Retold". This paper tries to interpret the composing of "The Old Tales Retold", a blending of world, from a complete new angle--collage art, thinks deeply over the collage manipulation behind the main intention and the objective effects by clarifying the collage elements, in order to be helpful to understand and discover the charm of this novel originally and comprehensively. This paper’s interpretation is not to increase a contentious answer answer to problems mentioned above, but to provide a new train of thought to solve these problems.The thesis named "The collage art of the Old Tales Retold" is divided into three parts:the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction part briefly analyzes the particularity in the works of Lu Xun and the research, summarizes the current research conditions of "Old Tales Retold", points out the problems and shortcomings, sets forth the meaning of selecting this topic, offers the explanation and definition of the "collage" theory. The body part consists of three chapters. In the aspects of the characterization, text structure and the style, this part approaches the collage art characteristics of" Old Tales Retold", explores and grasps the hybridity characteristics of "Old Tales Retold". The conclusion part sums up and reiterates the significance of this thesis. Besides, it also makes further efforts to clarify the principles that are obeyed in the process of writing this thesis and the hope to realize the significance of the target. The body part is briefly described as follows:The first chapter, the figure collage."Take a variety people and synthesis one", is a principle always followed when Lu Xun shapes the fictional characters. In "Old Tales Retold", Lu Xun had expanded the horizons of " take a variety people " from ancient to modern, the patchwork technique was more free, the collage traces more obvious. This characterization art of ancient and modern figures collaged together is divided into simple type, composite type and changes of three types. These shining the shadow of the modern people and not purely ancients image, are or typical, or vivid, or plentiful, or absurd, and have a reality of art which transcend time and experience, have a far-reaching means about conveying love and hate, appraising past and present.The second chapter, the text collage. Lu Xun collaged the multiple pieces of text and date, containing the myth, the legend, the official and unofficial history, miscellany, modern text. By the collage of function and transmitted meanings of text structure, Lu Xun re-structured the story, gave other people’s other meanings, gave the same piece of text different meanings, constituted different new texts to achieve his intent of "old tales retold".The third chapter, the styles collage.The chapter is made of "the romantic and modernist collage","the realism and absurdism collage","the modernism and postmodernism collage", with the aim of comprehending earnestly the form and connotation of style presented in" Old Tales Retold ".
