David Lodge is one of the most outstanding campus literary novelist incontemporary Britain. He has created a series of intellectual novels. His works havealways been loved by critics and readers at home and abroad. As a novelist who growup after World War Ⅱ, David Lodge have special sensitivity to thenew types of crisisand social phenomenon. Based on this sensitive consciousness, he depicts scenes oflife which drawing a vivid picture of the contemporary intellectuals deeply. Butdifferent from the traditional images of intellectuals in novel, David Lodge create agroup of intellectuals who lived in the system of contemporary college campus, theybecame more professional. Whether the environment they lived in or their behaviors,both represent obvious characteristics of the times. This thesis will combined DavidLodge’s concept of intellectuals with some related theory of intellectuals in western,to analyze the crisis of intellectual identity in David Lodge’s campus novel.This paper is divided into five parts. The foreword introduces David Lodge’sliterary achievement briefly, research status and the campus novel’s creation point andinnovations.PartⅠ mainly makes a description about intellectual identity crisis in DavidLodge campus novels, to indicate the status becoming absence of elite consciousness,addicting to the secular world and the spiritual world becoming barren by crisis ofintellectual indentify crisis that involved in three part--spiritual crisis, discourse crisisand academic crisis when campus intellectuals that the special group back into privatelife.Part Ⅱmainly about the reasons why produced crisis in David Lodge’s campusnovels, makes interruptions from social economy, education, culture and ideology.Part Ⅲ introduce the significance that David Lodge’s exploration of intellectualidentity crisis. Through the reflection of problems in academic world and scholarsthemselves. To explore scholars’ confusion, hesitation and choice in the specific historical circumstances. Besides, by constructing the intellectuals status of perth androbin who do not associated with the secular world imply the dirction of solvedmethod.The conclusion part summarize the significance of intellectual identity crisis inlodge’s campus novel, clarify its contribution in literature history and reference tocontemporary reality.
