Witch culture is a kind of cultural form originating from the stage of ignorance in theprimitive society, which involves astronomy and geography, Five Elements Theory and the EightDiagrams, sacrifice and entertainment, medical principles, literature and art, religion andphilosophy and other aspects. It plays an important role in Chinese diverse culture. From aparticular perspective, witch culture is synonymous with ignorance which constantly advocatedsuperstition, created ignorance, made a great harm to the common people and lulled the spiritualworld of people in its long history; From another point of view, as a kind of cultural formoriginating from the primitive society and controlled by irrational primitive thoughts, witchculture cleared up people’s fear resulting from facing incomprehensible mysteries, andcomforted the souls of people, what’s more, it provided various materials for the characterizationand plot organization in the literary creation later, and even the witchery thoughts also had animperceptible impact on literary thoughts. The importance of witch culture is very obvious, andit takes various chances to exist in each stage of human society to have an effect on thedevelopment of social culture in all periods. The vanguard novels of China originate from1980s. Chinese vanguard writers revoltingagainst the mainstream culture use the writing skills and mysterious writing skills of westernsymbolism, expressionism, magic realism, etc.for references, to show that they are Independent, distinctive and unconventional, as well as the irony for traditional literature and traditionalthoughts; On the other hand, in order to be against the limitations of traditional mainstreamculture for their modern writing, the vanguard writers take an opposite approach by seekinginspiration from the mysterious witchery and ghost culture to dig out the localized innovationresources of literature. This paper combines the Chinese vanguard novels appeared in1980s with the mysticalprimitive witch culture and analyses the witch culture factors existed in vanguard novels as wellas its roles played in the development of vanguard novels. In the introduction part, it introduces the academic circle’s research status on witch culture andvanguard novels, and has a profound understanding of the relationship between the two ones. The first parts make a theoretical definition of the witch, witchcraft and witchculture. Then explores three reasons that the witch culture appeared in primitive society canreappear in contemporary vanguard novels. The historical reason is that witch culture has beenalways there in Chinese ancient, modern and contemporary novels, and the vanguard novels havepartly inherited literary tradition. The internal reason is that the spirit of witch culture, whichbelongs to the regional culture, has been deeply rooted in the mind of writers and exerted asubtle influence on the writers’ creation concept. The external reason is that the Chineseattention to witch culture has been aroused again after the introduction of Latin American magicrealism into China. The second part describes the narrative exploration of vanguard novels associated withwitch culture. Although the vanguard writers pay more attention to the form rather than thecontent when writing, the evaluation on a novel cannot be conducted simply just from its formand detached from its contents. Therefore, this part not only expounds the creation of charactersrelated to witch in the narration, but also explains the influence of witch culture on vanguardnovels’ narrative form and techniques from the perspective of flash-forward of time experiments, the use of pause, and the attempts of unfamiliar and uncertain language in language experiments. The third part analyses the features of mystique and the appreciation of ugliness invanguard novels. It is clear that though the writings with the mystique and the appreciation ofugliness have given a special aesthetic style to vanguard novels, they have also made it very hardfor the readers to comprehend. Gradually, the readers would alienate the works and give upreading eventually after they have met their low-level sensory desire. This situation hasintensified and finally the vanguard novels have reached the end of the road. Some vanguardwriters stopped writing while others have reduced their exploration to the mystery and uglinessand started to return to the tradition....
