Under the background of peace and development, properly solve the territorialdisputes become the focus of the countries. Because of colonial rule, national interestsconflict and the strengthening of awareness of national sovereignty in Southeast Asia,lead to the complexity of the territorial disputes emerging. ASEAN since it’sestablished in1967, has experienced changes in the strategic environment of theSouth-East Asia Region. In the1960s, the Southeast Asian regional security andstability situation is very severe, often described as the regions of the rebellion, theBalkans of the East, or the regions of the domino. Territorial disputes betweenASEAN countries and the ideological polarization of the region is the geopoliticalcharacteristics of Southeast Asia. Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia, the Philippinesand Malaysia’s Sabah dispute, conflict in Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, Notonly pose a threat to this region some of the newly independent countries of the livingenvironment, but also a threat to the region as a whole order, and even the existenceof ASEAN has been questioned due to inter-state conflicts. The Analyzing of thesource of ASEAN’s territorial disputes, the ASEAN norms and the internationalconvention, ASEAN territorial dispute settlement mechanism, provides the rightreference when ASEAN countries in dealing with the territorial dispute settlement andwill help maintain the stability between ASEAN countries border area and the securityin ASEAN region. The current tense situation in China and the Philippines makes theSouth China Sea issue to address pressing, by studying the ASEAN territorial disputesettlement mechanism helps to accurately grasp the ASEAN countries in resolving theterritorial dispute policy bias and Selects the appropriate solutions, early settlement ofthe South China Sea issue.
