In the late19th century, China’s charity is in transition from traditional to modern stage. On one hand, because of bad management, lack of funds and other reasons, traditional charity has ebbed; On the other hand, as China portal opened, western church charity career fully rise in China. Inevitably, the early reformers’charity thought and practice are influenced by the factors at home and abroad in this historical background. This paper made a comprehensive and systematic study in the background, views, practice activities and impact of their charity thought and practice activities. Meanwhile, through the comparison of the Chinese and foreign charity, we can make clear the development of the China charity further, and make objective and real assessment. Full text is divided into four parts:The first part mainly introduces the status quo of China’s charity in the late19th century, tells the story of decadence of traditional charity and formation of early reformers’charity thoughts, and deeply explores the influence of western charity. Western philanthropy to the influence of the domestic charity mainly shows in three aspects: the first point is that the traditional Charitable organization were influenced deeply by church charity; the second point is that the positive propaganda of western philanthropy from the early reformers had accelerated the development of domestic charity; the last one is that modern books to charity activities of the western press introduce, deepen the general public of the western charity understanding, expand the influence of the western charity.The second part take the representative figures of early reformers for example, such as Feng Guifen, Zheng Guanying, Wang Tao, Xue Fucheng, Chen chi. This part mainly introduces their charity thought and practice.The third part makes the Early Reformers philanthropy and the Western church charity for comparison. Through the analysis of their goal, the organization, the mode of operation and the salvage effect of the same points and different points, truly reflects the development course of China charity.The fourth part discusses the influence and evaluation of the early reformers charity. From the two aspects of enthusiasm and negativity, affirm the early reformers on the charity performance, and also point out the problems, in order to provide reference for contemporary charity.
