This essay mainly do research in the Sino-Japanese relations under the influence of the US-Japan Alliance after the Cold War. As the most powerful country after the Cold War, in order to maintain its strategic benefits in East Asia, America chose to keep the US-Japan Alliance to intervene East Asia affairs and to prevent China from development. After the economic conflicts between Japan and America after the Cold War, with the rapid development of China’s economy and the overall national strength enhanced gradually, Japan considered China as a threat and chose to maintain the US-Japan Alliance to keep strategic superiority over China. Japan develops military strength gradually and hopes to make contributions to the international society that is appropriate with its economic strength and be a "normal country".Here is the several different period of the Sino-Japanese relations after the Cold War. The first period is from June1989to July1993.With the change of the international circumstance, the Sino-Japanese relations is on a new start, the two country’s relations is from stop to recovery. The US-Japan relations is on a departing trend and Japan tried to be a great country in politics by itself. The second period is from August1993to August1997.The "1955system "which had maintained for38years broke off and domestic politics was becoming conservative. At this time China’s economy was developed rapidly and the overall strength was becoming powerful. China Threat theory was brought out at this time which means Japan worried about China’s development and prevented it Japan chose to enhance the US-Japan Alliance to cope with Chinas regional influence. At this time a series of conflicts both in history and reality were brought out in the Sino-Japanese relations. The third period is from September1997to April2001.On one side, China and Japan built friendly cooperation relations devoting to peace and development, on the other side Japan made a series of law to be a normal country. New Defense Cooperation guidelines was brought out by US and Japan. The Japanese Diet passed through a new law about national flag and national anthem. The talk about amending Constitution in Japan also entered a new process. The fourth period is from April2001to September2006.Junichiro Koizumi was in power at this time and the conservative trend became stronger. Japan took more radical actions both about history and reality. The thoughts about historical problems was becoming vague and the defense policy was becoming more offensive. Japan tried to break off the restrains of the Constitution in a disgusted form and wanted to make nuclear weapons considering Korea’s making nuclear weapons as a threat. After the "9.11"Event America put anti-terrorism as the most important foreign objective. America constantly enhanced Japan’s position in the US-Japan Alliance to help America by sending army abroad. All this was served for America’s global strategy, but also Japan can make laws to make send army abroad reasonable. All these laws made theConstitution useless and cleared the way for Japan to be a "normal country". At this period except conflicts in Diaoyu Island and Taiwan Issue, nationals in China and Japan gradually held hostile attitude towards each other.Through the analysis above, we can draw some conclusions:First, the reason why the US-Japan Alliance continues existing is because US and Japan consider China as acommon objective, but the two country’s interest is not always the same. Second, after the Cold War Japan’s domestic politics is more and more conservative which is harmful to the Sino-Japanese relations. Third, considering strength, geographic position and historical problems, Japan takes more offensive policy towards China than America. Fourth, the US-Japan Alliance will continue exist and led by America. The US-Japan Alliance’s influence on Sino-Japanese relations will be changed with America’s East Asia policy and China policy. How to deal well with neighborhood including China while keeping the US-Japan Alliance is what Japan need to do if Japan wants to be a normal country.Fifth,we deal with the US-Japan Alliance with the attitude of learning fromhistory and facing to the future, still we defense our interests both in historical issues and practical problems. At the same time we need to get along well with America and actively participate in international society.
