The crisis that the Great Depression of the1930s posed to the Capitalist system, was the most formidable one since that system’s birth. Democracy was under severe attacks from the ever-ascending Fascists; while on the other hand, quite contrasting, the Soviet Russia was flourishing. Within these contexts, Harold Laski calmly compared Capitalist and Socialist systems, and pointed out the both systems’ advantages and shortcomings; moreover, he tried to find antidotes for the moribund Western societies. The prescription he gave was that, political leaders should guide the coordination between social classes, with the help of conditions created by situation, in order to facilitate the realization of grand goals; complementarily propel economic nationalization to bolster a "planed society", and furtherly, the better development of everyone.As one of the most influential political scientists, Harold Laski was significant figure in the development British intellectual history, as well as in the global Democratic Socialist movements. He derived wisdoms from both Capitalist and Socialist thoughts, and the ideas he proposed was specific in curing the Capitalist democracies. Furthermore, his success also reminds nowadays China that, Socialist system’s culmination was impossible, in the absence of assimilating Capitalist systems’beneficent elements during the social reforms.
