China is a continental country, the Chinese people haveto make their living by agriculture. In an agrarian country, agriculture is the primary basis of policy. Hence, throughout Chinese history, social and economic thinkingand policy have centered around the utilization anddistribution of agriculture. Agriculture in such an economyis equally important not only in peacetime but in wartimeas well. In an agrarian county, agriculture is the maior formof production, and every state devoted its greater attentionto what were then called the arts of agriculture and war.In the Lv-shih Chun’chiu, a compendium of variousschools of philosophy written in the third century B.C.,there is a thinking titled "Follow the change of thenature". It was no doubt inspired by the movements of thesun and moon and succession of the four seasons, to whichfarmers must pay particular heed in order to catty on theirown work. As the final development of this trend of thinking, the Lv-shih Chun’chiu maintained that the highestachievement in the spiritual cultivation of a sage lives inthe identification of himself with the whole of nature,i.e.,the universe. The important part of Lv-shih Chun’chiu is "TwelveMonthly Commands",which is first found in the Lv-shihChun’chiu, and later was also embodied in the Li Chi. The"Twelve Monthly Commands"gains its name from the fact that it is a small almanac which tells the ruler and men generallywhat they should do month by month in order to retain harmonywith the forces of nature. In it, the structure of theuniverse is described in terms of the Yin-Yang school. Thisstructure is spacio-tamporal, that is, it relates both tospace and to time. With such a cosmological theory, the Lv-shih Chun’chiutried to explain natural phenomena both in terms of time andspace, and furthermore maintained that these phenomena areclosely interrelated with human conduct.
