At present, China’s rapid economic development is not only in a new stage of socialism with Chinese characteristics created by Chinese Communists, but also in a new era when the role of sailing is highlighted in the world’s political, economic, cultural, and diplomatic development. The spirit of sailing is an inner support of sailing group and the development of maritime industry. The goal of building strong maritime power was proposed in18th CPC National Congress. This symbolizes that revitalization of maritime strength is key to achieve great rejuvenation of Chinese nation in the new period. In contrast with the powerful call of the Party, study of the nautical spirit in China has just started and nautical spirit lacks practical efforts. Moreover, quality-oriented educations always lagging behind vocational education. Therefore, development of the maritime industry is wanting in spiritual support and staying power. This will become a major problem for the future development of sailing. Today’s rapid economic development brings about an increasing demand of qualified personnel in the shipping industry. Strengthening nautical spirit and awareness of students who are major in maritime and relative staff is the key step of political education of Maritime Institutions. Ideological and political education of China’s maritime institutions, specifically the nautical spirit of teaching and research is still in the exploratory stage. Based on previous researches, this thesis analyzes the historical development of the maritime industry and the spirit of sailing reflected in it. Meaning and content of the nautical spirit is explained clearly in this thesis.The paper is divided into four parts. The first chapter introduces the research background. The discussion is started with today’s environment which lacks of social spirit and faith. Status, significance, content and methods of researches are introduced in this part. Chapter two is aimed at deepening the understanding of nautical spirit by a general introduction of concepts and theories about the spirit and the spirit of sailing. The third chapter discusses and analyzes the historical origins and evolution of the nautical spirit from domestic and foreign perspectives respectively. Chapter four is devoted to a clear, comprehensive, systematical analysis and summary of the nautical spirit.
