In the end of the1960s, the concept of visual thinking is studied and clarified by theprofessor of Harvard and art psychologist Rudolf Arnheim in his work Visual Thinking.Hejustifies the unity of vision and thinking through a lot of the facts,and points out that any thinking,especially creative thinking is operated through imageries.Visual thinking can sometimes passinformation which the text cannot convey,and can make up the cracks between sense and reason,perception and thinking, art and science.Cultivating students ’ visual thinking in the chemicalexperimental teaching will help deepen students ’ understanding of the chemistry experiment,cultivate students ’ scientific inquiry ability and innovation, improve the level of students ’thinking and problem solving skills.Using the method of literature analysis,the aticle summarises the theoretical research inChina and abroad,and defines the related concepts of visual thinking and visualimagery.According to the study status quo of domestic and foreign, the paper has pointed out thelinks between visual thinking and Gestalt psychology, visual thinking and creative thinking, visualthinking and constructivism, visual thinking and brain science. Combined with the practice ofmiddle school,we use our own questionnaire to carry out a survey on visual thinking amongchemistry teachers and high school students,with observation and other auxiliary meansunderstanding teachers ’ understanding of visualthinking. We found that visual thinking abilitylevel of the students is not very ideal. The survey results provide some reference for the trainingstrategy to develop students ’ visual thinking skills.Based on the status quo analysis and the theoretical analysis, as well as on the basis of aquestionnaire survey, the paper pointed out that through integration of visual thinking andchemical experiment teaching to cultivate students ’ visual thinking abilities,and discussed trainingand developing students ’ visual thinking through combination of eyes, hands and brain,interaction of vision,imagination and composition.With the discussion on improving the students ’ level of visual thinking strategies, articles inparticularly stressed the importance of establishing students ’image library of chemical experiment.This paper also analysed different chemical experimental teaching contents on how to developstudents ’ visual thinking abilities.Meanwhile, in the process of training the ability can’t be ignoredin visual thinking set, to play its positive role and overcome the negative effects.Finally, the papermade a briefly summary, and do reflection on the problems and on future research directions.
