| Reading is an important way of language input. In the process of English teaching in themiddle school, the teachers pay attention to explaining the language points, vocabulary andgrammar knowledge, ignoring students’ reading comprehension practice, which will hinder thedevelopment of students’ reading potential in the long time. Reading comprehension takes up alarge proportion in English test paper of the College Entrance Examination in Jiangxi province. Ifstudents are eager to get a high score in the College Entrance Examination, it is of significance toimprove the ability of English reading comprehension. The teachers think of the question that howto stimulate students’ reading interest in order to improve the students’ English reading skills andreading ability. This article looks at the teaching of English reading in high school from theperspective of MI theory.In1983, Howard Gardner, who is famous psychology professor of Harvard University in theUnited States, was first put forwardMultiple Intelligences (MI) theory in his book of Frame ofMind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. MI comprises verbal-linguistic intelligence,logical-mathematical intelligence, visual-spatial intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence,musical-rhythmic intelligence and interpersonal intelligence. He found another two intelligencesin1995, that is natural intelligence and existential intelligence. We learn that human intelligence isnot an element, but multiple from MI. The core of education is not that students how clever, butstudents in those aspects of smart and wise. Therefore, teachers should pay attention to developingstudents’ intelligence, be careful of student’s difference and teach students in accordance with theiraptitude in the process of teaching. MI theory advocates the development and cultivation ofstudents’ multiple intelligences. This is consistent with the concept education for all-around.This study focuses on developing students’ reading skills in English after referring torelative literatures on the study of MI theory and English reading teaching at home and abroad. This paper elaborates the MI concept, point out that normal people have a variety of independentintelligence, which intelligence of different combinations shows individual between intelligencedifferences. Therefore, teachers should design adaptive teaching activities to make the top studentsand studying sleepy harvested, stimulate students’ interest in English learning, mobilize students’enthusiasm for English learning and develop students MI according to the students’ intelligencetendency in the process of English reading teaching. The author design a variety of activities tomeet the different levels of the needs of students in pre-reading, while-reading and post-reading toprovide good opportunity for the students developing MI.This study designs carefully an experiment in order to verify the hypothesis on the basis of the study on the theory of MI. The experiment chose students of grade one in senior high school oftwo liberal arts classes in Dingnan Country of Jiangxi Province as the samples for the study andcarried out an experimental teaching semester. The teaching of reading in experimental classadapted to MI method while the controlling class applied traditional method. During theexperiment, two class students must participate in the entrance exam in Ganzhou City Board ofeducation in December,2010and June,2011and fill in the questionnaire, whose scores wereanalyzed by software SPSS11.0. The experimental results show that the students’ English readingscores in the experimental class have been greatly increased than those in the controlling class. Byanalyzing the data from the questionnaire survey, the method of MI could improve students’reading skills effectively, stimulate students’ interest in reading and affect students’ readingattitudes, mobilize the enthusiasm of students, develop students’ multiple intelligence system fully, promote English teaching and student’s comprehensive quality. |
