As the most important part of the curriculum, the textbook is the most direct product ofcurriculum reform. The textbook reflects the curriculum goals, but also directly impacts teaching. So the study on textbooks is necessary. As the most important part of textbooks, the illustrationshave been paid more and more attention. There are studies on a survey of the use situation ofillustrations in high school chemistry textbooks, classification and function of illustrations, application strategy of illustrations in high school chemistry textbooks, and so on. However, thereare few studies on the design of illustrations: What is the purpose of the use of this illustration; Is itnecessary to use this illustration; Can we replace the illustration, and so on. I just study high schoolchemistry textbooks from the view of illustration design. This paper is divided to five parts. The first part is introduction including the background tothe study of the problem, research tasks and methods as well as related research at home andabroad. The main task of the study is to analyze the design of high school chemistry textbookillustrations and give some suggestions, based on the classification and the design principles ofhigh school chemistry textbook illustrations as well as high school chemistry curriculum standards. The second part is the theoretical basis, used the theory of constructivist theory, the theory ofmultiple intelligences, as well as dual-coding theory of visual and text learning and so on. The thirdpart is the type and function of the illustrations in high school chemistry textbooks. The fourth partcontains the principles of the illustration and the case studies of the illustrations in high schoolchemistry textbook. The main design principles of the high school chemistry textbook illustrationsare scientific principle, clear principle, contact principle, familiar principle, aesthetic principle, pedagogical principle, and consistent principle with the intellectual development of students. Thelast part contains the suggestions of the design of high school chemistry textbook illustrations onthe basis of the fourth part, referenced to foreign high school chemistry textbooks: Emphasis onbasic, Reflect times, Close to our life, Pursue innovation.
