Since Textbook is an important ingredient of curriculum and a direct product of curricular reformation, which affects the implementation and realization of the curricular goal greatly. Textbook plays an important role in the tutoring systems, which involves not only the curricular content but the learning activity in the curricular design. The quality of a textbook has a direct influence on the curricular design, in turn the teaching effect and implementation of teaching aim will be influenced. Concerning about the textbook innovation, design of illustration is one of the important components. As for a textbook, it consists of letters and illustrations. These two components appear all though a textbook and are indispensable to a complete textbook. It's well known that letters and illustrations in a textbook show a close relationship and they are complementary to each other.In this article, illustrations in chemistry curricular standard experimental textbook of compulsory education were taken into considerations. Based on the existing researches on illustrations in textbooks, qualitative analysis on related literatures especially the functions of illustrations are detailed conducted by us. At the same time, the present application status of chemistry textbook for middle school student was discussed by investigation, interview and observation. Then the cause of the present application status can be answered. Finally, effective application strategies of the chemistry textbook illustrations are put forward. We hope our research can present chemical teachers a comprehensive understanding of the illustrations as well as operable and practical instructions on the illustration's application in teaching. There are altogether five parts for this article: summarization on illustrations in textbooks, properties of illustrations in experimental textbooks, present application status of experimental textbooks, application strategies of experimental textbooks and conclusions.
