Culture Start Experimental Study Of The Impact Of College Students' Way Of Thinking

Culture have an important impact on human’s mentality, psychological research can not be bornout of the cultural background of its survival. Now more and more psychologist believes that thepsychological research should be associated with the culture and in its field. Culture primingparadigm is a new method of the culture-oriented psychological research. It refers to an approachthat culture-associated stimuli are presented at first, and then the effects of the target stimuli canbe observed. The core of self-construal is how to define the relationships between themselvesand others. Self-construal includes two different types: independent self-construal andinterdependent self-construal. This individual difference dimension that roughly correspondswith the individualism-collectivism dimension at the cultural level The previous studies considerthat two different types of self-construal can exist in one individual, it means that individuals canbe expressed different self-construal tendency in different cultural, this is also the basis ofself-construal’s cultural priming study. Thinking style is an important part of culture, which isintegrated in people’s ideology and norms of behavior and direct people’s thinking and behavior.Thinking style reflected the stable cognitive tendency under the same cultural background, butalso some changes can be take place under the interaction of different cultures. Accompaniedwith the integration of economic and cultural of the East and West, the cultural background ofChinese has becoming more and more multicultural. We wonder that whether there are newfeatures in the thinking style of Chinese university students or whether it is reflect the integrationof traditional thinking and modern thinking under this multicultural background. To addressthese issues, this study used culture priming paradigm to research the characteristics ofuniversity students’ thinking style.In this study, there has three parts: first part is the study of cultural priming effects, and thesecond part is to research the characteristics of the university students’ thinking style, the thirdpart is to research the characteristics of the university students’ thinking style in different culturespriming conditions, and the third part is bases on the first part and second part. Then, based oneach of the research, the results are as follows:(1) Cultural priming effect confirmed existence in the study1, university students’self-construal characteristics show some changes in different culture priming conditions.In the dimension of dependent self-construal, there have significant differences between thethree groups. The effect in individualism culture priming group is significantly higher than incollectivism culture priming group and control group, especially in autonomy and individualismfactor; there is no significant difference between collectivism culture priming group and controlgroup.In the dimension of interdependent one, the effect in collectivism culture priming group and control group is higher than in individualism culture priming group, especially inrelationship-dependent factor, but no remarkable effect between individualism cultures priminggroup and control one. Compared with the collectivism culture priming condition, the primingeffect of individualism culture condition is remarkable.(2)Study2shows that university students’ thinking style show holistic tendency in general,according to the descending order, they are causality, contradiction, attention and perception ofchange. There are significant differences in gender, grade, and major, but no remarkabledifferences in living area and single children or not.(3)University students’ thinking style characteristics show some changes in different culturepriming conditions. Illustrates that the individual’s thinking style can take place under differentcultural backgrounds, and the cultural frame switching effect proved to be fact.Under the conditions of the individualism culture priming, there have significant differencesbetween the three groups on the total score. The effect in individualism culture priming group issignificantly lower than in collectivism culture priming group, especially in contradiction factor;but no remarkable effect between collectivism cultures priming group and control one.Under the conditions of the collectivism culture priming, the effect in collectivism culturepriming group is significantly higher than in individualism culture priming group, especially incontradiction factor; but no remarkable effect between individualism cultures priming group andcontrol one.
