Developing students’ autonomous learning ability is the important education goal of schools and the vital prerequisite and necessary method of acquiring knowledge and developing skills for students. However, in the middle school, especially those ordinary high schools, there are a considerable number of poor English learners. In order to change this situation, teachers should teach poor English learners in accordance with their aptitude and at the same time strengthen students’ autonomous learning ability. Our experiment which lasts a semester is done as follows:in early September,2011, the first investigation is made among poor English learners to make clear the following aspects: students’learning attitude towards English, their interest, method and the use of learning strategies. Therefore, we can accordingly put forward some teaching strategies to cultivate students’autonomous learning ability. Meanwhile, we’ll begin to carry out a one-semester teaching experiment in our classes to cultivate students’autonomous learning ability. At the end of January,2012, when the experiment is coming to an end, we’ll make the same investigation among the same students again. By comparing the research data collected in the above two investigations we can draw the following conclusion:the experiment of cultivating autonomous learning ability is helpful to promote students’ English learning, and eventually beneficial to cultivating autonomous learners. Therefore, it follows that students can be trained to become autonomous learners in time.
