The ancient Chinese colleges, the first beginnings of which were the Lizheng College and Jixiandian College officially set up in the Zhenyuan period of Middle Tang dynasty. After prospering in song dynasty, during which a number of famous ones were established, ancient colleges had absorbed and borrowed the lecturing system of Buddhist temple in the Southern Song dynasty for further developing and improving which lasted to Yuan dynasty, and were finally nationally popularized during Qing dynasty. With the history of more than one thousand years, ancient colleges, contributing much to the Chinese education and academic prosperity in the history, were one of remarkable miracles throughout Chinese culture and education history. In the meantime, as a cultural association for Chinese to be involved in the society, ancient colleges were deservedly to take part of social responsibility. That is, funds should be planned to guarantee the practice of variety of social activities in addition to instruction and research. Being called Chinese ancient private universities, ancient colleges combines Chinese traditional non-government running of schools and free lecturing and academic communication together, which are similar to the property of non-government colleges in the modern times. Chinese non-government higher education is developing steadily based on the policies of national reform and opening to the outside world, however, at the same phase, undesirable phenomena begin to appear, such as lack of standardization in admission, teaching and administration and poor management of school fees, finance and property right of legal representative. In this aspect, ancient colleges serve as an enlightenment to improve the financial management of higher education schools. Financial management of ancient college is much similar to that of present non-government colleges in both theory and practice. It is necessary for us to make analysis and summary of ancient colleges’funds and financial management experience for the purpose of promoting the healthy and sustainable development of non-government colleges in modern times and their financial management construction.
