With the development of science and technology and the popularity of the network, theInternet has become an important source of information. Therefore, using the network to learnthe thematic content is taken more and more seriously. However, according to the analysis ofrelevant information, learning that way does not achieve a good result as is expected. One of thereasons is that the network provides too many resources, which exceed the learner’s cognitiveload. This study aims to develop a web site for research-oriented learning based on TheCognitive Load Theory to provide students with a platform of research-oriented learning so thatstudents can learn in the network environment and by exploring the research-oriented learningmode and methods under the net work environment and change students’ways of learning aswell as improve their awareness of learning. Cognitive load theory is the theoretical basis of thisstudy. According to the study of the theory, we can analyze why the cognitive load arises, andprovide theoretical guidance for the net work design and development. Designing the websitelearning environment to support and promote learners’ learning based on The Cognitive LoadTheory is now popular in the education process. Therefore, the design to create a productivelearning environment for the learners based on The Cognitive Load Theory is of great boththeoretical and practical significance.The paper does some research on the design and development of web through the relatedmethods based on the Cognitive Load Theory. The main work contains several aspects as thefollowing.(1) Understanding the concept, nature and the learning process of research-oriented learning;Analyzing the implications, theoretical basis, and classification of the Cognitive Load Theory.(2) Proving the feasibility of the web design under the guidance of cognitive load theory bythe analysis of the theory and providing the teaching design model of the web site.(3) Having developed the site of research study based on cognitive load theory, taking thecourse《The ancient Chinese science and technology and literature and art》for an example onthe analysis of the general virtual learning environment.The innovation of the paper:1. Design the teaching model for the web site under the guidance of cognitive load theory, including the characteristics of the learners, learning goals, and the web for research-orientedlearning based on the Cognitive Load Theory on the basis of analysis of the basic structure andcomponents of the virtual learning environments and thematic Web site.2. According to the instructional design, develop the web site for research study on the basis ofthe Minquest learning mode. The trial of the Web site also proves the feasibility to carry out thelearning Web design under the guidance of cognitive load theory.
