Harvard University has been able to develop into well-known world-classuniversity, it is inseparable from the guidance of the idea from the successivepresidents. Derek bok, the 25thpresident of Harvard University , was not only anexcellent higher education practitioner, but also an excellent higher education theorist.Bok has made great achievements in exploring higher education theory, wrote"Beyond the ivory tower-social responsibilities of modern universities," and five otherhigher education works. Bok’s idea was mainly concentrated in these higher educationworks, and the main contents include: the repositioning of American universities, thenew interpretation of the the "three A" academic principles, the concept ofundergraduate education, the commercialization of the university, etc. Under theguidance of the above ideas, Bok carried out a bold reform and practice, including:implementing the core curriculum reform; Using modern management methods toreform the administrative system; Carrying out large-scale fund-raising movement.Through the research and analysis of Bok’s educational philosophy, we draw thefollowing enlightenments: accurately positioning university, adhering to the academicfreedom, balancing academic principles and social responsibility of academic research,developping talent training mode with the times, perfecting the financing strategy, theuniversity’s President should try hard to do a successful "mediator".This thesis mainly consists of four parts:Part1:Introduction. This part mainly deals with the source,the significance, contentsand methods, literature review ,the definition of the related concepts.Part2: The formation analysis of Bok’s school concept. The social background,personal experience, academic background and the former Presidents’s concept toinherit will be included.Part3: Bok’s educational philosophy and practice. This part will expond Bok’s ideasfrom the reorientation of American university, the new interpretation of "threeA"academic principles,the concept of undergraduate education, the commercializationof universities, and elaborate Bok’s contribution to the Harvard from implementing core curriculum reform, creating Bok Teaching center, using modern managementmethods to reform the administrative system, and actively developing fund-raisingmovements and other practices.Part4: To get the enlightenment to our university’s Presidents in the process ofcreating the first-class university through analyzing Bok’s ideas and managedpractices.
