Stanley Fish is an American literary theorist and legal scholar. He is the importanttheorist of the reader-response criticism now. His critical theory is known to Chinesereaders. All along, Stanley Fish mainly focuses on literary theory and legal studies. Heleft the United States Duke University in1998and shifted to the University of Illinoisat Chicago, and served as Dean of the Faculty of Arts and College, who started to payattention to the theory of higher education. Stanley Fish resigned from the Universityof Illinois at Chicago University in2004, he summed up the experience as a managerat the University and higher education. In this basis, he published this book "save theworld on your own time" in2008. The book explains systematically Stanley Fish’shigher education thoughts.Stanley Fish think that the real mission of the University is:(1) introduce students tobodies of knowledge and traditions of inquiry that had not previously been part oftheir experience; and (2) equip those same students with the analytical skills-ofargument, statistical modeling, laboratory procedure-that will enable them to moveconfidently within those traditions and to engage in independent research after acourse is over.Stanley Fish believe that the "academicizing" is the important principles that highereducation must follow. He points out that the university should "Do your Job","Don’tTry to Do Someone Else’s Job" and "Don’t Let Anyone Else Do Your Job".The thesis consists of the following four parts:In the first part, its introduction tell us the background of this question, researchingaims and status, researching methods and procedure,researching significance,.In the second part, it introduces the ideological source of Stanley Fish’s higher education thoughts. The authors think that the distinctively critical think and themission of university is closely relate to his subject background and philosophy.In the third part, it comprehensively explains Stanley Fish’s higher education thought.In this part, the main clue of research is that how to complete the university mission.It summarizes the Stanley Fish’s thoughts. These thoughts include teaching inuniversity, internal management of university, relationship between university andsocial, the operation principle of university, the value of liberal education.In the fourth part, the character and defects of Stanley Fish’s higher education thoughtare analyzed. On that basis, the value of Stanley Fish’s higher education thought isobjectively evaluated. The enlightenment of Stanley Fish’s higher education thoughtwhich promotes the development of education in china.
