This study attempts to explore the middle school students’ national consciousnessdimensions, investigate the situation and development characteristics of middle school students’national consciousness. It examin gender, age, school, family, ethnic identity, experience abroadand other factors on the effect of students’ national consciousness.Based on the literature as wellas the open questionnaire,we developed a National Consciousness Scale,which had been provedto be reliable and valid by pretestings.This study first compiled a students’ national consciousness questionnaire ( NationalConsciousness Scale, referred to as NCS ) as research tools. 800 middle school students inShenyang and Benxi were investigated, finally draws the conclusion and puts forward somesuggestions for education.1. NCS had good reliability and validity,and its reduced edition with 35 items containedthree dimensions,which were national emotion and will,cognition and evaluation.2. Overall, middle school students has strong national consciousness.In three dimensions,the national cognitive scores the highest, followed by the national assessment and nationalemotion.3. The development of middle school students’national consciousness was as follows:national consciousness in general developmental trend is first grade students’ nationalconsciousness scored highest, second falling, to high picks up somewhat, but still below the firstscore.4. Development characteristics of national consciousness in each grade was as follows:national emotion of senior first grade students is the highest, followed by the junior first gradeand second grade, the grade of second year in high school students of grade one is lowest;national cognitive levels are highest, followed by the first grade and high grade, high gradestudents the lowest; students of grade one in the national evaluation the highest level, followedby the first grade and high grade of second year in high school, junior middle school students tothe national evaluation of the minimum.5. On the overall level of students’ national consciousness, there was no significantdifference in gender, but in the national emotion dimensions have significant sex differences,girls.have stronger national emotion levels than boys.6. In addition to grade and gender factors, ethnic identity, the family seat, parental education level and occupation type, experience abroad influence national consciousness.
