State anxiety was proposed by Spielberger in1972. Due to state anxiety is easy to regulateand control by environment, the effect of it upon second language acquisition becomes morevaluable aspect in SLA research. In the Affective Filter Hypothesis, Stephen D.Krashen(1985)claimed that the process of SLA is influenced by affective variables which includes anxiety,self-confidence and motivation. Anxiety plays an important role during them and also has anecessary relationship with classroom participation which is a key to interaction betweenlearners and teachers. Therefore, according to low extent of middle school students’ classroomparticipation in China, this paper discusses the relationship between foreign language stateanxiety and it, and tries to solve those questions existing in it.This paper uses survey and classroom observation to investigate three questions. First, whatis the relationship between state anxiety and English classroom participation in middle school?Second, does facilitative anxiety have active effect to classroom participation? Third, how to useproper way to regulate state anxiety and to promote learner’s English classroom participation?What’s more, the subject of this research is students of two classes in Senior two in Heze ofShangdong province. Results of data analysis proved that only proper state anxiety couldpromote learners’ classroom participation, too low or too high anxiety extent will hinderlanguage learning and teaching quality.There are five parts of this paper. The first part includes research questions, purpose, andsignificance, it points state anxiety is a main factor to influence classroom participation. Thesecond part is literature review of foreign language anxiety and classroom participation, it tries topoint out the necessity to probe relationship between them. The third part introduces researchsubject, instrument, procedures and methods (classroom observation, survey and interview). Thefourth part analyzes research results, finds out the relationship between two variables, givesseveral advices to regulate state anxiety and promotes participation. The last part is conclusion ofthis paper.
