To develop students’ability of reading comprehension is the main object of the English teaching for senior high school in our country and the test focal point. Reading comprehension teaching in high school accounts for the maximum period, but what is worth pondering is that students’ reading ability is relatively poor although a lot of time and energy is invested in this respect. Senior high school students’current reading level already can not satisfy the needs of the present curriculum and college entrance examination. Therefore, in recent years how to make students read fast and efficiently has become an important goal for many English educators and for the English teachers. The traditional reading teaching methods which attach importance to grammar analysis and vocabulary reciting can’t fulfill the requirement. With the development of basic education curriculum reform, the research and development of senior high school English reading teaching model is the general trend of English teaching. Therefore, the task-based teaching method comes into being in order to adapt to this change. The core of reading task based teaching is to improve students’ comprehensive ability, to teach the English as a skill, not just as knowledge. Since the task based teaching method are available, some linguists has did some theoretical and empirical study from different angels and obtained some useful results. Task based teaching method is having a significant impact on language teaching. Many teachers believe that task-based English teaching method is good to improve students’oral English but is not very useful to improve the students’ reading ability. At the same time, the reading is still the centre of college entrance examination in our country, so many teachers still adopt the traditional teaching method, which does neither benefit the students nor is in accordance with the "English curriculum standard".Based on task-based reading teaching mode theory, this study discusses the efficiency of task-based teaching method used in English reading teaching and presents the task reading teaching model and steps, teaching case designing. Teaching in the No.1Middle school of Zaoyang city in Hubei province, I conducted my teaching experiment which last for more than half a year from Sep,2011to April2012. The traditional teaching method is applied in the control class-class4while the task-based teaching approach is adopted in the experiment class-class1. The experiment results are promising, and further analysis gives the reasons for the effectiveness of the task-based reading approach which stimulates students’interests and can promote the students to change their learning styles from passive learning to independent, cooperative, inquiry learning mode. As a result, students’English reading ability is improved, thus the task-based reading teaching is effective to improve students’ reading comprehension ability. At the same time I also found some problems needing to be paid attention to. Therefore I put forward those problems to the English teachers in order to continuously improve our English teaching.
