The study and research on computer assisted language learning (CALL) has flourishedthese years in the field of second language acquisition (SLA). This thesis will make anexperimental study of the application of CALL to senior high English class teaching and theeffect on the students’ development of their autonomous competence in CALL condition. The development of science and technology nowadays witnesses a new age ofknowledge explosion with the knowledge replaced faster and faster. The students must becultivated into lifelong learners to adjust themselves to the new time. Therefore, autonomouslearning becomes more and more important for senior high students.CALL provides abundant authentic texts, pictures, sound and video materials forteachers and students and immediate feedback makes autonomous learning by studentspossible. But the results from related study and research shows that many schools would notaccept the student-center model and are still using the teacher-centered model. A survey tellsus that above80%senior high students admitted that they have little opportunity to developtheir autonomous competence in class and even many teachers don’t know what and how todo in the process of class room teaching and learning. After9years’ study in primary and highschools, students have already get used to the traditional English teaching model andcompletely depend on teachers in organizing, planning and evaluating their learning whenthey enter senior high school, without knowing that they are the center of classes. Therefore,it’s urgent to provide a practical and feasible model for the English classroom teaching andlearning.
