Republic Of China, The Hui Nationality Newspapers And Magazines About Marriage Problems Research

Great transform of social thinking took place in China during Late Qing and the Republic of China, Chinese traditional culture and people’s traditional conception dramatically changed. Along with the naissance of the Republic of China, the New Culture Movement and the War of Resistance Against Japan and other major historical events, all kinds of social thought spread like a storm, influencing all walks of various ethnic groups. In this context, the traditional concept of marriage in the Hui society also drastically changed, all kinds of marriage issues were emerging.During the Republic of China, with the improvement of the social and political status and economic development of the Hui ethnic group and the resulting large number of Hui modern intellectuals, the new development of the Hui culture was made, and the necessary conditions for the Hui culture-consciousness activity were prepared. In the far-reaching Hui New Culture Movement, Hui intellectuals released a lot of marital issues responding to the marital problems of Muslim society with the Hui newspapers as a platform.Selecting many correlative articles discussing marital problems from the Hui newspapers of the Republic of China, this thesis carries out a detailed inspection to the concernful problems of early marriage, luxury marriage, arranged marriage, marriage between close relatives and corrupt customs of marriage. This thesis includes four parts:the first part gives a brief account of the basic situation of the Hui society during the period of the Republic of China; the second presents a description of traditional marriage from the Hui newspapers as well as reveals the marital problems of the Hui society during the period of the Republic of China; the third examines Hui intellectuals’analysis and discussion of marital problems; the fourth is the conclusion.This thesis holds that the discussion of marital problems of Hui ethnic group conducted by the Hui intellectuals have its religious, social and scientific characteristics, i.e., that is respecting the Islamic fundamental teaching and maintain Islamic values as well as actively introducing the social and scientific perspectives to explore issues related to real social life with the view of reality and the scientific attitude. The measures of solving marital problems and social issues by Hui intellectuals have some degree of reference to the Hui community today. The discussion of the Hui intellectuals of the Republic of China on marital problems is a cultural-awareness activity in a particular historical period. When having full correct self-assessment of the tradition and status quo of their culture, hui intellectuals had self-identity with excellent cultural composition on one hand, in the context of the new environment and new era,they conducted timely self-transformation of their culture on the other hand.
