The Sporting Exploration Of Western Liberal Education

Liberal arts education, which originated in ancient Greece, is the earliest education thinking of Western culture tradition, and gradually become a dominant concept of education. As an important part of education, Sports occupies an important position in the liberal arts education. Liberal arts education that emphasize the harmonious development, improve the quality of other people’s views and ideas have important significance in theory innovation and reform practice of school physical education in China. From an academic perspective, liberal arts education has contained a rich physical implication. The concept of liberal arts education is not only reveals the nature of sport culture, highlights a special role of sports in the comprehensive development of human freedom, meaning the unique charm of liberal arts and modern values of sports, but also indicates the nature of school sports culture and its core mission. There are two advantages of the founding of the concept and value Liberal arts in sports. Firstly, it can offer the thought help for school physical education and the theory innovation of courses. Secondly, it still can help people understand the advantages and disadvantages of the modern school’s sports, and then, it also gives some ideas and suggestions for the modern school’s sports’ reform and development.This paper is divided into four parts:the first part mainly clarifies the background and the significance of the research; summarizes an overview of international research developments; and presents the ideas, contents and methods of the research. The second part analyzes the basic meaning and history of liberal arts education. Firstly, this part is going to giving the definition of liberal arts education and explicit the central concept of this paper. Then it will analyze the main features, the background and history of liberal arts education, in order to grasp the overall context of the theory of liberal arts education.The third part will look into the sports implication of liberal arts education. This part mainly analyzes the major forms and sport physical meaning of liberal arts education. It emphasizes on the nature, the status and role of sport in liberal arts education provision; it will state the basic characteristics of school physical education and sports training mode, and so the other basic problems. The forth part discusses the enlighten men of liberal arts education to the School Physical Education Reform in China. This topic will focus on three aspects:the concept adjustment of liberal arts education and school physical education reform, the system innovation and path selection, the paper relays on the analysis of literature, the analysis of concept, the analysis of compare and the expert interviews to develop the research for relative topics.
