Hugh of Saint-Victor is one of the great educationist of the Middle Ages,whose representative work,Didascalicon,was regarded as an encyclopedia book and an indispensable teaching material for Monastic School in the field of education.His reclassification of knowledge promoted the development of monastic education.Based on the text of Didascalicon,this paper tries to explain that Didascalicon plays an important role in school teaching and social education through the method of induction,synthesis and comparison.This paper is divided into four parts.The first part introduces the status of Hugh of St.Victor and the basic information of educational research.The second part summarizes the concrete connotation of Hugh’s seven liberal arts education.The third part makes a comparative analysis between the seven liberal arts education of Didascalicon and the traditional seven liberal arts,and explores the innovation of Hugh’s seven liberal arts education.The fourth part sums up the profound influences of Hugh’s seven liberal arts education in Saint-Victor on the present and future generations.In the conclusion part,the author tries to draw a picture of monastic teaching in Saint-Victor and discuss the important role of the seven liberal arts education in the Middle Ages.
