Eton College is a shinning pearl among English public schools. With a long history of more than six hundred years, Eton has developed into a topnotch private school in UK even the whole world from a charity school for poor students. Started with the analysis of Eton’s historical development, this thesis put emphasize on the summery of its school-running characteristics after the reform since1900s. And through studying the effects of English culture tradition on reshaping Eton’s school-running features, detailed reasons have been introduced. Exploring Eton College’s success, we can be inspired on our way to deepen secondary educational reform and develop schools’ strong-comings.This article contains five parts, and the main idea of each part is:Part one:illustrate the background, theoretical value and practical value of this study as well as the relative researches home and abroad, and then conclude the angel and innovations about this study.Part two:date back to the historical changes of Eton College. It was built with the holy order of Henry VI, which attracts it more attention than other similar schools. However, some scandals like poor management, physical punishment to students, and behindhand curriculums were exposed from the17th century to the end of the18th century. The college took some courageous measures to improve these defects, which led to this revival. Up to now, Eton College has been known as one of the best middle schools in the world.Part three:summarize Eton’s main school-running characteristics, which mainly embody on the school-running concept, administrative system, curriculum system and teaching management, students management as well as the elect and management of teachers. With the spirit of fostering elites, Eton pays attention to develop the students’traits of self-confidence, integrity and honesty, enthusiasm, fortitude and toleration. Eton embraces a hierarchical management system of division and cooperation. Following the leadership of the board, head master, director of curriculum and the tutor play their distinctive roles in the education system of the school. The curriculums of Eton can be divided into three categories:the fundamental courses, the activity course and PE. The elaborately designed courses, the one-student-one-tutor academic management and the special education of ’never let student lag far behind’ guarantee the most qualified education of Eton. Furthermore, the strict on electing and administrating teachers give a driving force to the teacher resources, which is one of the most important reason makes Eton differ from other similar schools.Part four:analysis the reasons of Eton’s school-running characteristics and then conduct a conclusion:British’s historical tradition of religion and donation education plays a strong role in the form of Eton phenomenon. English people have a keen affection on aristocratism. The yearning for ranking among the top-class society makes English people place their hope to the public school’special education which fosters talents behaves as a gentleman. At the same time, the old Estonians’ kind help of manpower and material resources also contributes to the shape of Eton phenomenon.Part five:unearth the valuable ideas of Eton’s school-running pattern; explore the ways that our private schools can learn form Eton on the process of building school brand and implementing education reform. On the one hand, private schools in China should strengthen their internal structure; while on the other hand, they have to optimize their external environment.
