Vocabulary, as one of the three major components (the othertwo are phonetics and grammar), constitutes the language knowledgeand serves as the foundation of all language skills. However, building upvocabulary is the most difficult task for Chinese students involved in theirEnglish learning. It is, therefore, essential to study vocabulary learningstrategies and its teaching methods. This paper, based on thequestionnaire of vocabulary strategies employed by Senior Threestudents in a Senior High School, makes some pedagogical suggestionson vocabulary teaching and learning. Meanwhile, it carries out asystematic training of these vocabulary strategies for those studentsinvolved in the investigation and training. After a5-month training in theexperimental class(while the controlled class has no such training), thestudents in the experimental class and the controlled class arecompared and judged with the same mid-term and final tests.According to the data, this paper analyses the relation betweenvocabulary learning strategies and academic achievements of thesestudents. It comes to the conclusion that English vocabulary learningstrategy training is helpful to change students view on the vocabulary,form good English learning habits and improve their Englishcompetence as a whole. The thesis consists of six chapters. ChapterOne provides the background information, the overall structure and thepurpose of the thesis. Chapter Two introduces theoretical backgroundand the reviews both home and abroad. Chapter Three discusses themethods and plans of the research in terms of the subjects, instrumentsand the implement procedures. Based on the above survey, ChapterFour carries out the training of English vocabulary learning strategies.Chapter Five analyses the effectiveness of these strategies. Chapter Sixserves as a summary of the whole thesis.
