With the rapid development of our English teaching and research, more and morepeople are aware of the great importance of the culture in foreign language study. In2003, the Chinese Ministry of Education approved a new curriculum for the Englishcourses in senior middle schools, and it’s the first time to put “cultural awareness” intoone of the goal of the foreign-language teaching. Also, it lays emphasis on thecultivation of students’ cultural awareness and cross-cultural communicativecompetence.In recent years, many scholars and teachers have undertake researches related toculture teaching and have published many works and articles, yet few of their researchesare connected with how to develop the foreign cultural teaching in senior high school.The author tries to find out the present situation of culture instruction in senior highschool English teaching by using literature method, questionnaire method and dataanalytic method. And the author tries to analyze the present situation of culturalteaching in senior high school, and reveal the culture contents and teaching strategies insenior high school. We hope it can shed some light on foreign language teaching insenior high English education.This paper consists of six parts:The first part is the introduction part. It provides the background for choosing thetopic, the methods of study and the base of study.The second part is the literature review. It mainly refers back to the relatedachievements on cultural teaching home and abroad..The third part is the analysis of the present situation of cultural teaching in seniorhigh school, it reveals the factors that influence cultural teaching: student, teacher,textbook and test by analyzing questionnaire and data.The fourth part illustrates the involved culture contents in senior high school fromsocial norms, cultural values and the mode of thinking, for example, salutation, greeting,farewell words, telephone language, non-verbal form of body language, compliment,thanks, apology, the language of accepting gift, conversation related to the topic, vocabulary and sentence.The fifth part sets forth the cultural teaching strategies in the teaching of words,grammar, listening, spoken language, reading and writing respectively.The sixth part gives some possible suggestion to teachers, students, textbookcomposers and test question setters.In the conclusion part the author reflects the advantages and disadvantage of thispaper, and I hope it can shed some light on foreign language teaching in senior highEnglish education.
