"Developing the students’ self-learning ability" has been set as one of the main goals of English teaching and learning today, and how to improve them has been the focus of educators and experts both at home and aboard in recent years. In China, many experts are trying to cultivate students’ self-learning ability by using Learner-centered Teaching Plan (LCTP). A lot of research has showed that LCTP is an effective way to improve students’ self-learning ability. However, most researches have been made on teaching science like mathematics, physics and biology and so on, and on students in universities and senior high schools. Only a few studies have been involved with junior middle schools so far. This time, the junior school, is the key transition period for students’ learning. Therefore, this thesis concentrates on developing junior school students’ English self-learning ability by applying LCTP so as to study English teaching from a new perspective.In order to investigate the effectiveness of LCTP on cultivating students’ English self-learning ability, the present study in Daotian Middle School for a year in which one class adopts the Teacher-centered Teaching Plan (TCTP) while the other class uses the LCTP method.Based on the data drawn from pretests and posttests, questionnaires and interviews and with the help of SPSS16.0, the thesis analyzes the data and presents the results of the experiment in terms of the learning motivation and attitude, learning plan, self-monitoring, learning strategies and self-assessment. The results show that LCTP method can facilitate the students’ English competence because the students in the experimental group have done better jobs than the students in controlled class.Limited by shorter research time, fewer and narrow subjects, there exist some shortcomings, which may affect the accuracy of data analysis. But it is assumed that LCTP is an effective way to cultivate junior school students’self-learning ability.
