In recent years, it has been a hot topic of higher education in China that how to build a reasonable and general education system to eliminate the excessively narrow drawbacks and adverse effects of university graduates’the knowledge base and field of vision caused by previous university education overemphasizing professional education. Some domestic famous universities have also begun the practice and exploration of the general education system, and have made some practical experience and theoretical results. At the same time, we have also noticed that the function of ideological and political education has not received enough consideration in so much function of curriculum system of general education. President Hu Jintao has pointed out:" It has vital and profound strategic importance to strengthen and improve university students’ ideological and political education and train talent employees to ensure the realization of building a moderately prosperous society and further realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation." This statement profoundly expounded the strategic position and the extreme importance of the ideological and political education in colleges and universities. While as an important part of university education, general education has strong ideological quality in itself, and has been an important channel to pass on ideology and conception such as world outlook, views on life, values, political idea and aesthetic standard. Ignoring such channel will result in a variety of ideological and political ideas to seize the general education classroom, which is not conducive to neither the formation and propagation of ideological and political concept of socialism with Chinese characteristics nor the cultivation of the builders and successors of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Therefore, this paper attempts from the viewpoint of the carrier of ideological and political education to examine and analyze the problem of university general education curriculum system building and put forward some insights not yet ripe to attract the attention of academic attention to this question. For insufficiency, I solicit criticism and correction from experts and scholars.This article body part is divided into five parts. The first part is the introduction Summarizing significance of this thesis, previous research review, research methodology and innovation. The second section describes the meaning of several key concepts as well as the relation between general education and ideological and political education. The third section discusses the feasibility and necessity of building a system of general education courses as a carrier of ideological and political education in universities. The fourth section sets out the setting principle and implementation measures of the general education curriculum system. The fifth part puts forward some suggestions to protect and promote the general education curriculum system as a carrier of ideological and political education in universities.
