This thesis aims to reflect the development history and present situation of art education in Nigeria secondary school factually and objectively by the collection and analysis of Nigeria art educators and artists’articles,reviews and related documents of government and education departments. On the basis, the thesis analyses the problems and reasons of art education in Nigeria secondary school deeply. Finally, this thesis discusses the development trend of the art education and our country can get any inspiration from the history and present situation of the art education in Nigeria secondary school.The full text is divided into seven sections.The first part analyses the related material of the art education in Nigeria secondary school and sorts out material from three aspects:Nigeria education, history of art education in secondary school, present situation and problems of art education in secondary school. On basis of defining the key words, it stresses that the art education in Nigeria art school is liberal art education at the secondary level.The second part puts the curriculum as the main line, religions and politics as the main influencing factors and divides the history of art education in secondary school into four period:the period of traditional apprenticeship art education, the period of religious and colonial education, the period of modern art introduced into secondary education,and the period of traditional art back to the secondary education. And then, this part summarizes the characteristics of every stage.The third and the fourth parts, found out that short of qualified teachers, lack of material and facilities, low study interest are the main problems on the basis of analyzing the status of the art education in secondary school. Point out that lack of policy orientation, poor government supervision and inadequate social awareness are the underlying causes of these problems. The fifth part discusses the integration of art course and technology course and the combination of art education and art industry are the two possible development trends of art education in Nigeria secondary school in view of the status of art education in Nigeria secondary school and the opinions of the experts.The sixth part puts forward that our country should focus on traditional art and enhance qualified teachers in the process of art education by the analysis of the history and current situation of arts education in Nigeria secondary school.Part seventh is a summary section.I summarize the context of this study and put forward my suggestions of art education in Nigeria secondary school in respect of improving the interest of education managers, getting support of parents, providing adequate teaching materials and equipment, and training for qualified art teachers.
