Abstract/Summary:
Vocabulary learning is an important part of language learning for primaryschool students, the learners’ proficiency of listening, speaking, reading and writingare predicted by the vocabulary level and the learners’ vocabulary proficiency.Primary school students, especially the senior primary school students lack thevocabulary cognitive strategies which lead to an inefficient vocabulary learning.Learning strategies, especially the cognitive strategies can enhance the vocabularylearning for primary school students. New English Curriculum has included thespecific standards of the learning strategies during the primary school stage.The researcher attempts to form the cognitive strategies in vocabulary teaching.Firstly, based on the understanding of primary school students’ vocabulary learning,aspects including the beliefs towards the vocabulary, cognitive strategies use areinvestigated by means of questionnaire to explore the status quo of vocabularylearning among senior primary school students. Pre-test and post–test were conductedto evaluate theAccording to the findings from the questionnaire, a15-week experiment iscarried out by means of learners training. In experimental group, in teaching thevocabulary, the most commonly used cognitive strategies were integrated with thevocabulary teaching, in this way, the researcher helps the learners enhance thelearning effects and consolidate the learning results. In control group, cognitivestrategies and vocabulary were taught in a traditional way. The statistics reveal thatthe use of cognitive is significantly related to the vocabulary learning effects, the useof cognitive strategies can predict the test results.Although the study has some limitations such as the time span and researchdesign, some suggestions are provided for vocabulary teaching and learning.
