This paper mainly explores the cohesion theory applying to the modern teachingof reading in secondary schools, involving the source, definition, development andapplication of the cohesion theory. According to the study found, the cohesion theorychiefly used in English language studies, translation studies, foreign languageteaching research and stylistic studies since its rise. However, the system is rare usedin the field of secondary Chinese teaching instructions of reading.The fist part is the introduction, which through the settings of the CollegeEntrance Examination cohesion topics to lead the cohesion theory. By analyzing thedistribution and types feature of National College Entrance Examination from2006to2010, we find the cohesion questions will be the exam in recent years’ CollegeEntrance Examinations, whose problem-solving skills and ideas related to thecohesion theory. It is an innovative application of breakthrough that the cohesiontheory is applied to secondary school modern reading teaching. We prepare to reflectthe modern reading problems from assessing the cohesion topics in the CollegeEntrance Examinations, and discuss the relationship and effect between the cohesiontheory and Chinese teaching of reading in secondary schools.The second part is an overview of the cohesion theory. It is the most importanttheory in discourse analysis, so introduce the study of discourse analysis is necessary,and then we discuss the source, development, definition and scope of the cohesiontheory.The third part is talking about the application of the cohesion theory, theproblems in the teaching of modern reading in secondary schools, and the relationshipand position of the cohesion theory and modern reading in middle schools.The fourth part introduces and analyzes the various means of the cohesion theory.Using the Chinese modern reading parts of the PEP new curriculum in high school asthe analysis text, we instance analyze and synthesis apply the three cohesive devicesin the alleged relationship, the logical connection and the thematic structure.The fifth part is the conclusion of this paper about some inspiration occurredconscious in the modern reading teaching in secondary schools from the application of the cohesion theory. It is an emerging issue that the cohesion theory is applied tothe modern reading teaching in secondary schools, so its systematic and operationalyet to be perfected.
