China began building high-rise buildings in the1980s, now it has become a bigcountry of the world’s super high-rise construction. High-rise building projects havebeen one of China’s construction industries that play a major role in the promotion ofthe social advancement and development, and the improvement of living standards. However, high-rise building’s security accidents occur frequently over the years andhave caused more momentous casualties, economic loss and adverse impact on thesociety than normal construction. Previous studies have demonstrated that the safetymanagement of the sub-layer has a significant impact on the safety of the entire project, and safety communication is a very important course of the safety management in ahigh-rise project.Taking a few subcontractors of two high-rise building projects of Guangzhou asexamples and with the method of Social Network Analysis (SNA), this paper builds asocial network model of the sub-project safety communication, analyzes the interactionbetween network embedded modes, the structure characteristics and whole networkindex, furthermore identify the relationships between the structural characteristics ofcommunication network and safety climate. The paper work and research resultsmainly reflected in the following three aspects:(1) Build the social network model of the sub-project safety communication. Aquestionnaire was developed to survey the frequency of communication betweenproject members, which determine the “connection” between the “nodes”.Finally, by using the software UCINET the visual model of safetycommunication network was built. The model shows that safety communicationhappens around some core members to expand the dense occurrence ofinformation transfer between the various actors, but the mode of transmission ismostly one-way pass from the individual.(2) Identify the characteristics of safety communication network and theirimpact on the safety climate. From the perspective of the overall characteristics,we found the relationship between the characteristics index and safety climate points: the stronger cohesion of the safety communication network, the lower ofthe central tendency, the better the safety climate. Based on the case study ofproject safety management practices, this paper presents three core conceptsstarting from the characteristics of the communication whole-network toimprove the safety climate. From the perspective of the individual characteristics, refer to theperson-organization fit theory, the indicators of social network and relatedorganizational expectations were constructed, also the grading standards andcontrast ideas. Then construct a sample of person-organizations matchingindexes from the actual data, combined with the safety climate of the differentsubcontractor. The study found that individual play an intermediary role in thesafety communication and task dependencies in the organization expected morematches, more active role of the project safety climate; individual powers insafety communication and responsibility of organization expected have been ahigh degree of match, but has played a negative impact on the safety climate, especially during the late days of construction when the project team matured. Finally, from the dynamic organization design theory some principles was given, which may adjust the person-organization fit to improve safety climate:①create the interactive network organization into the pressure to innovate;②setof corporation responsibility to ensure the right people in right place. Lastly theconclusion was corroborated through the case projects’ practical experience.
