With the further development of the construction of world-classuniversities in China, to accelerate the quality growth of scientific research hasreplaced the quantity growth, and becomes the new theme of development. It isconsidered that international collaboration is an important way to improvescientific research quality. This study focuses on two questions:(1) Whether theinternational collaboration papers are significantly better than non-internationalcollaboration papers on quality?(2) What is the reason?This study is designed to test significant differences between internationalcollaboration and non-international collaboration papers on the dimensions ofjournal class and citations, based on1999-2010SCIE and SSCI papers ofShanghai Jiao Tong University. The study finds that the top50%IF journalproportion and the average citations are higher in international collaborationpapers, the un-cited rate is lower in international collaboration papers. Thepromotion of international collaboration to the quality of research papers has anobviously positive effect.Through the interview of30researchers of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, this study finds that: a third of the respondents believe international cooperationpapers are better than non-international cooperation papers, while most of themconsider there are no significant differences between international cooperationand non-international cooperation papers. But from different aspects, most ofthe interviewees think their research ability has been promoted by internationalcollaboration. The main factors are: partners’ research ability and influence, theleading edge of research, the open nature of the research ideas and the researchspecification.
