English reading has been greatly emphasized in high school. However, despite the fact that both teachers and students have made great efforts, the result is still unsatisfactory. The national English curriculum requires that the students learning style should be changed, which encourages many people to explore about the inquiry learning. This is treated as an important mission of the basic education reform. Commencing from the inquiry learning, it cannot only change the students’learning style, but also change the teachers’ teaching ways. The inquiry learning is used to solve the practical problems through requiring students to observe, discover, induce and practice by themselves.However, in reality, teachers, in most cases, still use the traditional teaching methods in order to complete task and make sure students to get high marks in the examination of different level. The teachers lay more emphasis on teaching students how to get high marks than on students autonomous learning, which is the reason that inquiry learning that can attract students’ intersts, extend students’knowledge and cultivate students’ integral abilities becomes a formality.In English teaching, reading is not only the main channel for language input, but also the main channel to improve the students’ language proficiency. At present, inquiry learning is used in enhanching the language aspect, but not many researches have been done to improve students’ reading ability.This thesis intends to testify the effectiveness of inquriy learning in the process of senior English reading teaching through one-term classroom English reading teaching by using inquiry learning.. The author of this paper uses questionnaires, classroom experiment and pre-test and post-teast to collect needed information. It is proved that the studensts’ reading ability has been improved by using inquiry learning. It is also proved that students have made progress even in their English speaking and writing after using inquiry learning.
